The voids that were filled by cutting off trade with China meant less competition for American manufacturers.
Our expectations for quality were higher, since the American mfgs could afford to build quality into their products instead of having to compete with Chinese Slave Labor.
Of course even some patriots were known to visit China Town a couple times a year to buy FIYA CLACKIES and BOTTLE ROCKETS, since there never was a domestic mfg
Stupid American consumers eventually accepted lower quality.
